8 inspiring ideas to fill the space between the cabinets and ceiling

When planning your kitchen remodel, one of the things you need to determine is whether or not to extend your new cabinets all the way to the ceiling. It’s important to mention that the vast majority of houses built in the last 50 years have 30 or 36 inches kitchen cabinets that were installed so that there is a 12 inch gap between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling. The dimensions of these cabinets make their contents easily accessible to most of us. However, in recent years, kitchen cabinets that extend to the ceiling have become increasingly popular. In addition to allowing for more storage, these new spaces look great in both traditional and modern style kitchens. Discover 8 inspiring ideas to close the space between the cabinets and ceiling.

1)

Adding open storage spaces

Add doorless units at the top of your cabinets and use that space to recall your lower cabinets’ color. At the same time, it creates a balanced harmony the kitchen. Highlight decorative elements that you like and bring a unique touch to your kitchen; you can even add horizontal closing cabinets to optimize your storage space.

2)

Ceiling-high cabinets

If the clearance is 30 centimetres or more and your ceiling is straight, consider adding cabinets above the current ones. Horizontal opening cabinets or false door cabinets (which cannot be opened) can be installed. In the first case, you will optimize your storage space while “false cabinets” contribute to an even finish of your kitchen, filling the empty space to the ceiling.

3)

Taller cabinets

Installing tall kitchen cabinets that extend all the way to the ceiling eliminates dust accumulation above the cabinets and increases storage space. If your current cabinets do not reach the ceiling, a small cabinet can be added on top of the existing one, with a single, longer door covering both. Taller kitchen cabinets give the impression of a larger, more airy kitchen.

The only downside is that the overhead contents of these new cabinets will be harder to access. A trick to overcome this would be to keep a small step ladder handy and/or store kitchen items that you only use occasionally on the shelves closest to the ceiling.

4)

Adding white crown moldings

If you chose new cabinets that are taller than before, in the case where only a small space remains to be filled, simply install beautiful white crown moldings. It will add height and a more stylish look to your new kitchen.

5)

Adding glass cabinets

Use new glass-door cabinets to showcase your decorative dishes. Select plates usually used for special occasions such as festive meals. You can also consider installing little spots under these high cabinets as extra lighting. To keep the look sparkling, remember to clean this new space on a regular basis.

6)

Seal the space with decorative moldings

Finish off the top of your cabinets by simply closing the area with a panel and enhancing it with decorative moldings. This panel serves as an in between for the top of the cabinets and the moldings. Ideally, both are made of the same material to ensure the shades match perfectly. This new look will prevent dust from accumulating in this area, reducing cleaning time.
