Kitchen Island: 9 design ideas

How nice it is to gather with family and friends around the kitchen island for a drink or a bite to eat! But when the time comes to renovate your kitchen, it’s the perfect opportunity to rethink your island. Do you want to integrate appliances? A butcher block? Shelves to store your cookbooks? These are just a few of the many options you should consider to ensure that your island meets your needs and provides the atmosphere you want to create in your kitchen. To help you in this process, we have selected 9 masterfully executed kitchen islands that may inspire you.

1)

Kitchen island with wine cellar

Create more space to move around your kitchen by embedding the wine cellar in your kitchen island. An ingenious idea to keep your favorite red and white wines at hand (and at the right temperature). A festive touch in your new kitchen!

Since the wine cellar will have to be plugged in, a new electrical outlet must be installed by a qualified electrician who will respect the Régie du Bâtiment du Québec’s construction code.

2)

Island with bookshelves

Do you own an impressive collection of cookbooks? This is the perfect fit for you! Consider installing sturdy shelves in your island that can support the weight of all those precious books. It will keep your favorite recipes easily accessible and stylishly organized.

3)

Island with a built-in microwave

Clear your countertop to maximize meal prep space! Get an island with a built-in spot for your microwave. As always, when installing an electrical appliance, make sure to hire a qualified expert to ensure that it is setup properly.

4)

Island with butcher block

The butcher block is made of individual strips of wood fused into an elegant slab. The wood species used for its manufacture are usually maple, cherry and black walnut. To clean it, simply apply one or two coats of mineral oil or worktop oil with a soft cloth every month. It is also possible to protect it with a GreenGuard certified clear varnish (absence of contaminants) to avoid premature wear and tear and to ensure the countertop’s impermeability.

Your butcher block island will bring a touch of warmth to your new kitchen and will blend in perfectly with your quartz countertops.

5)

Farmhouse Island

Add a wood trim forming an “x” on the ends of your island to give your kitchen a farmhouse look. This addition is also in perfect harmony with the floor, also made of wood. In the photo above, it’s more of a farmhouse chic style with the quartz countertops and brushed gold hardware.

6)

Island with a contrast look

Matching the island with the cabinets and countertops will create symmetry in your kitchen. However, using different cabinet and/or countertop colors will provide a nice contrasting effect. As a result, the island will become the centerpiece of your new kitchen.

7)

Island with a built-in seating area

If your kitchen configuration allows it, have you thought of using your island to add a bench seat? What a great idea to make your kitchen even more inviting!
